Privacy Policy

My Family Budget (“we,” “us”) operates https://myfamilybudget.net and helps households track personal finances. This policy describes what data we collect, how we use it, and your choices.

Information we collect

  • Account data: name, email address, and password (stored as a bcrypt hash only).
  • Financial data you enter or import: accounts, transactions, categories, budgets, goals, investments, and notes.
  • Bank connection data (optional): if you connect a bank through Plaid, we receive transaction and account information authorized by you. Plaid access tokens are stored encrypted on our servers and are never sent to your browser.
  • Security logs: sign-in events, bank connect/sync/disconnect, exports, and related audit metadata (including IP address where available).
  • AI assistant (optional): if you enable the assistant, questions and relevant household summaries may be sent to OpenAI to generate responses. Bank tokens and passwords are never shared with OpenAI.

How we use information

  • Provide and secure the service for your household.
  • Import and display transactions when you connect a bank through Plaid.
  • Generate budgets, reports, and optional AI assistant answers.
  • Detect abuse, enforce access controls, and maintain audit records.

We do not sell personal information. We do not use your data for advertising.

Third-party services

  • Plaid— optional bank account linking. Plaid's privacy policy applies to data collected through Link. See plaid.com/legal.
  • OpenAI — optional AI assistant only, with your explicit consent in Settings.
  • Infrastructure: hosting and managed database providers used to operate the application.

Your choices

  • Export your data as CSV from Settings at any time.
  • Disconnect linked banks from Settings (encrypted tokens are deleted).
  • Enable or disable two-factor authentication and the AI assistant in Settings.
  • Request account or household data deletion by emailing support@myfamilybudget.net. See our Data Retention Policy.

Security

We use HTTPS, encrypted sessions, role-based access, encrypted Plaid tokens at rest, and optional two-factor authentication. Two-factor authentication is required before connecting a bank through Plaid. Details are in our Security Policy.

Children

The service is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children.
